What are gauntlet-style mittens?
Named after the protective hand armour worn by combatants in the Middle Ages, a gauntlet style glove or mitt protects both hand and wrist.
In fact, the practice of “throwing down the gauntlet” goes even further back to ancient Rome, when a combatant would cast one of his gauntlets on the ground and declare a challenge. To take up the gauntlet meant to accept this invitation and agree to compete.
We are centuries past the days of medieval tournaments; today’s big battle for gauntlet-style leather mitts is keeping the wearer warm in freezing winter temperatures. With their premium leather and sheepskin lining to repel icy winds, we believe these mittens are definitely up to the challenge.
Crafted in Quebec, Canada by renowned leathersmiths Fourrures Grenier, our leather mitts for men are not only practical but stunningly designed. Gorgeous caramel in colour, they are accented with a layer of matching fringe at the wrist, and trimmed with Indigenous-inspired braiding at the cuff.
The luxurious exterior alone is proof of their superior quality and artisanship, but these mittens are also fitted with a removable black sheepskin lining, 6mm thick for the ultimate in warmt and comfort. This lining extends into the wrist (gauntlet) section of the mitt for additional coverage of hands and forearms from snow and wind chill.
Gauntlet-Style Leather Mittens are especially effective when winter activities require many hours spent outside in cold weather. Wear them when snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing. Bring them to the hockey rink to put on as you cheer your favourite hometown team or figure skater. Keep them by the door for snow shovelling or walking the dog on those sub-zero days when you need extra protection from the elements.
